If You Have to Cry, Go Outside ... And Other Things Your Mother Never Told You Read more: Kelly Cutrone’s Self-Help Book Encourages Young Women to ‘Celebrate the Magic’ Inside Themselves

Sure it does.  This is definitely not a traditional self-help book.  Kelly C. is a work horse, and she doesn't pay her interns any money, but that's the reality of the industry.  It's hard to stay relevant, be fresh, consistently put out good work, and maintain that reputation in a creative field.  So i understand why there are so many big personalities in tv, movies, fashion, and art.  It's about making a statement.  It's about being heard.  But most importantly, it's about making a unique, lasting impression on a lot of people, and that's incredibly hard to do every few months.

I wrote a paper in college about how modern journalists are forced to brand themselves more and more to maintain readership or even attract new fans.  The only problem is, people aren't brands.  Exhibit A: Tiger Woods.  They make mistakes, they aren't always so certain about who they are or what they represent.  Their opinions change.  They change.

And I realize this is the extreme.  Holding environmental and social stressors constant, peoples' behaviors can be fairly consistent.  So public identity-building or "branding" if you want to call it that, may be really beneficial to us if we can avoid being pigeonholed.  I like the philosophy that Logan espouses in her entry about being the best version of herself, so I've reposted my favorites here (easier listed than done!):

- Give people more than they expect and do it cheerfully.
- Don't believe all you hear, spend all you have or sleep all you want.
- When you say, 'I love you ,' mean it.
- When you say, 'I'm sorry,' look the person in the eye.
- Never laugh at anyone's dream. People who don't have dreams don't have much.
- Love deeply and passionately. You might get hurt but it's the only way to live life completely.
- In disagreements, fight fairly. No name calling.
- Don't judge people by their relatives.
- Talk slowly but think quickly.
- When someone asks you a question you don't want to answer, smile and ask, 'Why do you want to know?'
- Remember that great love and great achievements involve great risk.
- When you lose, don't lose the lesson !
- Remember the three R's: Respect for self; Respect for others; and responsibility for all your actions.
- Don't let a little dispute injure a great friendship..
- When you realize you've made a mistake, take immediate steps to correct it.
- Smile when picking up the phone. The caller will hear it in your voice..
- Spend some time alone.
